Shipping container dimensions and capacities
Check the internal dimensions and the permitted payload before you plan the stow. A few centimetres of variation between manufacturers is normal, and on palletised cargo that difference can cost or gain you a row.

These are representative industry figures and vary slightly between manufacturers. The weight you can actually load also depends on road limits along the route, which are often lower than the box itself allows. Ask us for the exact dimensions of the unit before you load.
Which box for which cargo
- Standard (GP) — general palletised or cartoned cargo that fits within the normal height. The usual choice and the cheapest.
- High cube (HC) — about a foot more height. For bulky, light cargo that runs out of volume before it runs out of weight.
- Reefer — temperature-controlled cargo. The machinery shortens the internal length, and plug-in power is charged separately at the port.
- Open top — when the cargo has to be loaded from above, or is taller than the door opening. The roof is closed with bows and a tarpaulin.
- Flat rack — cargo out of gauge in width or height, machinery and heavy pieces. Higher payload, but it has to be properly lashed.

Jebel Ali Detention Calculator
Enter how long the box has been in your hands and its size, and the calculator works out the carrier’s detention against the standard Jebel Ali scale. The rates are progressive: each band charges only for the days that fall inside it.

Carrier detention starts when the free days written into the bill of lading run out, and it is charged progressively. This calculator works in US dollars, the way the lines invoice it. Port storage is separate and is charged in Rial.

Storage is collected by the terminal and is separate from carrier detention. The rate depends on the customs procedure and the equipment — a reefer runs at several times the dry rate. Pick the procedure and the number of days.
